Are you a budding actor or do you enjoy speaking beautiful poetry and entertaining prose? Perhaps you fancy yourself as the next Marcel Marceau? Whatever your skill there is a class for you in this Section. Perform a monologue or join with others to offer a duologue or even a short play. There are opportunities to present improvised work or to perform your own original verse. NEW this year are classes for Devised Physical Theatre.

The Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals are always hotly contested, and offer a wonderful showcase for the best of best.

Any short original or published play or excerpt from a published play by any author - duration 30 minutes. Maximum 20 players.

10 minutes set up time will be allowed. Costumes and make-up are allowed but should be kept to a minimum. Small props such as a table, chairs etc. and hand props permitted.

The Short Play classes are held in the Sussex Hall at the White Rock Theatre. This venue is a flexible space, and performers are invited to make creative use of it.

The Stage is 10m wide and 4m deep. Tabs are situated 2/3rds from the front of the stage and should be operated by the entrant. Lighting is a basic wash. There is no sound desk, but groups may use recorded sound effects or incidental music on their own CD/Cassette players.

There is no need for performers to feel confined to the stage area. Other areas of the Hall may also be used. On request, it is possible to rearrange seating to modify the performance area(s), so that, for example, presentations could be made "in the round".

No properties whatsoever, not even hand props. Chairs and tables as provided by the Festival may be used.

Adjudicators

Jenny Thornton AGSM (Teaching) ALAM (Acting, Public Speaking) CertEd, CDE, LISTD (Dance)

Jenny trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and, having led a performing arts team, now enjoys running her own performance centre, delivering drama, dance and musical theatre to students from 4 years to adults. Her work in a local secondary school involves A Level Drama and Theatre Studies and she also works in drama clubs. She is an Assistant Principal for Edexcel, examining GCSE practical performances and an adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals.
