Welcome to the 2024 Hastings Musical Festival Dance Section!
Welcome to the Syllabus for the 2024 Hastings Musical Festival Dance Section! The proposed dates are Sunday 3th March to Thursday 14th March 2024. This is an All England Qualifying Festival this year.
Please note that the ages for duet, trio, quartet and group classes have been reinstated to 10 and under, 14 and under and 21 and under, as agreed with All England Dance.
National dance is now called Global. Song and Dance is now Musical Theatre and Character is now Narrative/Character.
This year we will continue using our original marking scheme.
Duets- dancers can only dance once per class.
Trio/quartets- dancers can only dance once in each class.
Groups- 3 groups per dance school per class and the same dancers can only be in a maximum of 2 dances.
In the Gold Medal class you do not have to qualify. If the winner achieves a mark of 87, then the Phyllis Godfrey trophy is presented and a prize of £150, the Gold medal will only be awarded if the dancer achieves an aggregate of 90 for both dances combined.
The entry qualifications for entry to the Bronze medal you have to be aged 9,10 and 11yrs and will have to qualify by obtaining a mark of 83 in both ballet and character. For the Silver medal you are aged 12,13 and 14 yrs and will have to qualify with a mark of 85 in both ballet and character.

This year we will be asking all entrants to upload music and any title and synopsis for your character dances on to playandperform. These can be added on the home page of the entry system. From there you can upload a music and Synopsis for each of your entries.
A new Trophy has been donated this year for Dancing Contemporary Group which will be the 'Milford Family Cup' presented by Vicki Milford, Rebecca Tromans and Claire Hart

Dancing Medals
The Gold Medal class, if the winner achieves a mark of 87, then a trophy is presented and a prize of £150, the Gold medal will only be awarded if the dancer achieves 90 marks( exceptional plus if we are using the new marking scheme).
The entry qualifications for entry to the Bronze and Silver Medals have changed. For the Bronze medal you are age 9,10 and 11yrs and will have to qualify by obtaining a mark of 83 in both ballet and character (in the new marking system this will be distinction, honours or exceptional if we are using it). For the Silver medal you are aged 12,13 and 14 yrs and will have to qualify with a mark of 87(in the new marking scheme this will be distinction plus, honours or exceptional if we are using it) in both ballet and character

Jill Baldock
Qualifications: LIDTA, ARAD
Jill has a love and passion for all things theatrical. Her vast and full career has given her the knowledge and desire to inspire the next generation of performers.
Her training started at the Hylton Bromley School in Merseyside, where she gained several scholarships from the I.D.T.A. and continued her training at the Royal Academy of Dance and the Place (London's Contemporary School). During her early years Jill entered The Sunshine All England Competitions and gained 7 solo gold medals in the London Finals receiving the Sunshine, the Modern and the National Trophies. She was also invited to be a part of the Beryl Grey Workshops.
Jill worked as a professional dancer/performer for many years in TV, Film, Cabaret and the West End - shows included "Kiss Me Kate", "Carousel", "The King and I", "Oklahoma", "Fiddler on the Roof" and many more. She went on to become an international choreographer, director and producer of theatre and cabaret shows. Producing pantos, cruise shows, children’s plays, summer seasons, even Shakespeare! At the same time developing her own theatrical/management agency.
Her love of teaching took her back to the studio and worked for the Italia Conti School, the Arts Council, Pineapple, whilst running her own performing arts school.
She then diverted her career into the music business, producing for EMI, Virgin, Carlton and recorded many artistes - Shirley Bassey, Howard Keel, Petula Clarke, the London Philharmonic and many, many more. She had the honour of producing the official recording for the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday. During that time her music publishing & production company was awarded the coveted Ivor Novello Award.

I now mentor students from the Royal Academy of Music with movement coaching and theatrical expression, I am also involved in encouraging movement to mature actors…… I love the mix of my theatrical challenges and cannot wait to adjudicate your fabulous festival… Good Luck to everyone!”
